Barking Emerges as London’s Hottest Area
Extensive regeneration is set to transform Barking into one of London’s most exciting and picturesque places to live.
London is a city that’s undergoing constant regeneration and transformation. The latest area that looks set to experience the benefits of extensive investment is Barking and Dagenham. This area of East London has until now been largely overlooked by people searching for a new home, and for no good reason. Affordable and with great transport links to the centre of London, it’s got plenty going for it. Perhaps though, its transformation into Barcelona on Thames will see its popularity soar. Yes, you heard us right! Here’s everything you need to know about the changes that are afoot in the area.
It already has great credentials
Barking and Dagenham lies just nine miles east from the centre of London, but has been largely ignored by prospective buyers. Those people may have been missing a trick, as you can be in Central London in just fifteen minutes and secure a property that, compared to some in other Outer London boroughs, is great value for money. The area is one of many that has been earmarked for regeneration though, and new, exciting plans have been revealed for the borough, in particular Barking town centre – which has required a rather continental new moniker!
Barcelona on Thames
Barcelona on Thames is the name that has been given to the exciting new development at Barking Riverside. As well as lots of new homes, this new town centre is also going to boast a marina, numerous restaurants and bars, and even a new station. To put it simply, it will be one of the most impressive regeneration projects seen in East London since the Olympics and the related transformation of Stratford. While Barcelona on Thames is an affectionate nickname, it shows just how different the area will be from the Barking of ten or twenty years ago. Some might call it delusions of grandeur, but we prefer the word aspirational. Why shouldn’t Barking become one of London’s most attractive areas?
Attracting a creative crowd
One of the main aims of the project is to attract creatives who have been priced out of central London. This is to help create a whole new kind of identity in the area, and to make Barking one of East London’s creative hubs. Could it rival trendy areas like Shoreditch and Hoxton, which aren’t that far away but have a much cooler reputation? With low rents and great links to the capital, there’s no reason why it shouldn’t be able to become the place for London’s creative talent to base themselves.
